Why do you practice?

Where do I begin?  I practice for the sweat.  I practice for the clearing and the meditation.  The escape for 90 minutes.  The reconnection that takes place between my mind, my body, and my soul.  I practice because it’s the only place in the world I can give my all and I will get 100% back from it no matter what I was able to give that day.  Where else are you guaranteed such a return?  Yoga has been a gift that has transformed my life and brought me to where I am today…and all it took was practice.  Not perfect – just practice.  And more simply: I love it.

Where did your yoga practice begin?

My practice started on a very cold winter morning at Bikram Yoga Glastonbury.  I hadn’t worked out in months and I literally had no idea what I was getting myself into…I also had no idea that I was taking my first step onto the path that would shape the rest of my life.  I was sore, I was soaked, and I had nothing left to give at the end of that first class.  And I could not wait to get back on the mat.  I was hooked.  

 What can a student expect from your class?

I teach Bikram Yoga, a set sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, and a student can expect that my class will never be the same from one class to the next.  I work with everybody in the room; making sure each and every one of them feels strong and confident in what they are doing.  I love to laugh and smile with the class as they work outside of their comfort zones.  Most of all, students should expect to feel like they CAN do this yoga, no matter what their starting point is, and they can count on me to teach them how. 

Why are you a yoga teacher?

I am a yoga teacher because I didn’t see there to be any other option, really!  I fell so in love with the practice right off the bat and developed the desire to teach very shortly after.  I teach because there is nothing better than the feeling that you’ve helped someone…you taught them how to use this technique to heal their bodies and ease their minds, you’ve given them the gift that has changed your life and now they have the opportunity to do the same on their own.  

At the risk of sounding cliche:  It’s the best job in the world.

What do you love about Hartford Sweat?

I love Hartford Sweat for the community that we are.  Every time I walk through the doors, I feel like I’m home.  I love Hartford Sweat because we have the most amazing bond amongst the teachers and the students.  I love that we give back to and support the community in Hartford that has given so much to us and I’m proud that we’re able to make a positive impact here in downtown Hartford.  We’re a uniquely special place, very different from any other, and I love being part of it all.

Your favorite yoga posture and why?

I can only pick ONE!?  This is tough, but at the end of the day, my favorite posture is Triangle Pose.  It’s been a journey of a posture for me, so that’s why I can now call it “my fave”.  In the beginning, I was all “bend” and no “buff”; I couldn’t even hold on to the posture for the entire prescribed amount of time in class.  My straight leg slipped out constantly and I was utterly EXHAUSTED when it was over.  You get the idea.  With consistent practice, I’ve come to have a body that is balanced with strength AND flexibility.  Triangle pose feels good, I can breathe through it and (dare I say) smile at the same time!  I have a newfound self-confidence, and now when we hit Triangle Pose in class, I am excited to rock on!
